New homes in British Columbia are about to get more energy-efficient thanks to changes that are coming to the BC Building Code. These changes are outlined in the BC Energy Step Code. What will it mean for builders and suppliers? For local governments? For home buyers? What are the potential benefits for businesses and communities in Northern BC? These are the questions that will be answered during Step Up to Step Code Week, which will be presented by the Canadian Home Builders’ Association (CHBA) of Northern BC and the Community Energy Association (CEA) from April 11-14.

Since early 2021, CEA and CHBA Northern BC have been collaborating in the delivery of Building a Legacy – North , a program focused on the implementation the BC Energy Step Code in Northern BC through training and support of the building industry and local governments. Since the first webinar was presented last April, Building a Legacy – North has delivered ten webinars that have attracted a total of more than 1,000 participants. Multiple videos, Northern BC case studies, information about rebates, and other resources have also been provided online and delivered during presentations to municipal Councils. Funding for Building a Legacy – North has been provided by BC Hydro.
The Regional District of Fraser Fort George is the first local government in Northern BC to adopt the BC Energy Step Code and is requiring all new residential buildings to at least meet Step One by April 1, 2022.
