SUMMARY:Future-Proofing Construction in Cold Climates
DESCRIPTION:Join us for day 1 of this 2 day “Industry Innovation Days” event\, presented by CHBA Northern BC and Community Energy Association through the Building A Legacy Initiative. \nDay 1 kicks off with instructor and high-performance home builder\, Mark Bernhardt\, presenting “Future-Proofing Homes: Role of the BC Energy and Zero Carbon Step Code for Climate Resilience and Adaptation“ using regional case studies\, discussing challenges to Step Code implementation\, and suggesting practical\, cost-effective strategies to build to Step 3 and beyond. \nNext\, we’ll transition to the strategies needed to future-proof existing buildings\, by presenting case studies of deep energy retrofits taking place in a single family home and a multi-unit residential building underway in Prince George. We’ll learn how home-owner David Claus is upgrading his 100-year old residence to meet passive-house energy standards\, and what BC Housing is doing to retrofit a 50 year old\, 6 building\, 34 unit complex. \nIn facilitated discussion\, we’ll ask our audience of builders\, building officials\, energy advisors\, suppliers\, and other industry stakeholders\, “What’s needed specifically in this region to scale up deep energy retrofits\, and how can we collaborate to make that happen?” We will discuss the unique challenges to implementing deep energy retrofits in northern communities and explore solutions and opportunities for scaling up retrofits\, including what the role of local government is for enabling them. \nFinally\, the day will end off with a presentation of particular interest to building officials and energy advisors about the new Step Code Compliance Checklist and using it to highest benefit in new residential construction projects. \nPending approval for 6.5 CPD from BC Housing. Continental breakfast and lunch included! \nBuilding A Legacy North is a collaboration of CHBA Northern BC and Community Energy Association\, primarily funded by BC Hydro.
