SUMMARY:Understanding and Managing Your Home's Electrical Load
DESCRIPTION:Are you interested in learning more about retrofitting your home to make it more comfortable\, healthier\, and energy efficient? Join Community Energy Association and retrofit industry experts for a webinar series geared towards community members wanting to learn more about home energy retrofits. \nUnderstanding and managing your home’s electrical load \nPart 1: Simple ways to reduce electricity use and manage upgrades \nEnergy retrofits often call for electrical service upsizing for heat pumps\, electric hot water heating\, and electric appliances. The session will review electrical service sizing concepts and load management strategies to avoid electric service upgrades. Case studies will demonstrate service upgrades are not always necessary and help equip homeowners for related conversations with builders and other service providers. \nPart 2: FortisBC and BC Hydro’s plan for grid management \nHear from BC’s largest utility companies about their plans to ensure residents can install heat pumps and EV equipment with confidence. \nEvent is free of charge. If you can’t attend the webinar – no problem! We’ll provide the slide deck and a link to the recording to all those who have registered. \nAbout the Presenter\nBen Giudici\, P.Eng – Riverside Energy Systems \nBen worked in the electrical utility industry and post secondary education before joining Riverside Energy Systems in 2009. He is an electrical engineer\, with extensive experience in photovoltaics and storage\, zero-energy grid-resilient buildings\, and energy retrofits. Ben is heavily involved in raising awareness and developing workforce capacity in these areas through Natural Resources Canada\, Canadian Home Builders\, and several BC post-secondary institutions. \nRobyn Webb\, Manager\, Local Government Energy Efficiency and Climate Action – BC Hydro \nRobyn Webb\, BA\, MCIP\, has worked on climate solutions at the neighbourhood and municipal level in Manitoba\, Alberta\, and BC for over 15 years. She has led the development municipal climate action policies and programs to decarbonize the transportation and buildings sector. For instance\, while at the City of Edmonton she managed a household energy efficiency and solar PV incentive program entitled Change Homes for Climate. Robyn currently manages BC Hydro’s Sustainable Communities program where part of her role is communicating the many initiatives underway at BC Hydro to prepare for building and transportation electrification across the province.

SUMMARY:Future-proofing construction in the Thompson-Okanagan
DESCRIPTION:The BC Energy Step Code puts British Columbia on a path to ensuring that all new buildings are built “net-zero energy ready” by 2032. At the same time\, owners of existing buildings are starting to take on deep energy retrofits in order to save on energy bills and enjoy greater comfort. \nIn a province as big and diverse as BC\, regional contexts are important for understanding how the Step Code and deep energy retrofits should best be implemented at the local level. The changing climate\, new technologies\, and emerging policies are important factors too. \nHelp prepare the Thompson-Okanagan construction industry\nSign up for this free\, full-day event for builders and contractors\, local government officials\, and others industry players. \nLearn how housing can be built and renovated to higher standards to ensure safety\, longevity\, affordability\, and resilience in a changing climate. Presentations will explore the current and future energy landscape\, the possibilities for new constructions and retrofitting\, and the role for local governments and collaborations in advancing the industry. \nA free breakfast and lunch are included. \nRSVP for Free \nAgenda\n8:30-9: Breakfast and registration \n9-9:15: Welcome & context-setting: Future-proofing our buildings \n9:15-10:15: Energy landscape of BC \n10:30-Noon: Future-proofing new construction: the role of ESC and ZCSC \nNoon-1: Lunch \n1-2:15: Future-proofing existing buildings \n2:30-4:30: Role of local government and collaboration to enable future-proofing \nEvent Partners\nThis event is brought to you by the Thompson-Okanagan Climate Action Network (TOCAN) with funding and support from BC Hydro and the Climate Action Secretariat. \nTOCAN is a peer network that supports local government staff from municipalities\, regional districts\, and Indigenous governments to share knowledge\, discuss\, and implement opportunities to collaborate – all to support climate action in the Thompson-Okanagan region. Community Energy Association is the secretariat to the network. \nBC Hydro is a sustainable energy leader\, generating and delivering electricity in environmentally and socially responsible ways. \nThe Climate Action Secretariat\, housed within the BC Ministry of Environment\, drives change to achieve British Columbia’s greenhouse gas emission reduction targets.

SUMMARY:Deep Energy Retrofits: Insight & Inspiration from First Nations Communities
DESCRIPTION:Join Gaëtane Carignan\, of Community Energy Association to learn about key elements of successful energy retrofit programs that have been achieved in First Nations communities in British Columbia with presenters Richard Hall\, independent First Nations Housing Consultant\, and Karim Abraham\, CEO- Community Power. \nPresenters will address assessing\, planning and executing a right path for deep energy retrofits\, at scale\, in community. Facilitated discussion will follow. \nDeep energy retrofits involve changes to the entire building\, including insulation\, windows and doors\, air barriers\, as well as ventilation and space and water heating equipment. An average retrofit can save 10% to 20% of energy while a deep energy retrofit can save 50% to 60%. When approached systematically and thoughtfully\, deep energy retrofitting existing homes increases their durability\, makes them more comfortable\, and reduces the cost of heating and cooling. \nPending 2 CPD points from BC Housing\, this event is one of several Building A Legacy North activities\, enabled through a collaboration of Community Energy Association and CHBA Northern BC with funding support from BC Hydro and Fortis BC. The delivery of this webinar has been inspired by the large-scale\, multi-year\, energy retrofit aspirations of Nisga’a Nation\, and will offer a sneak peak as to what’s to come during an exciting\, multi-day\, in-person Northwest Energy Retrofit Forum\, June 3-5: www.communityenergy.ca/events \nAbout the Presenters:\nRICHARD HALL — International Read Seal carpenter\, NISI qualified building inspector\, independent First Nations Housing Consultant \nAfter 38 years of experience as a Red Seal carpenter\, home builder\, construction foreman\, qualified building inspector\, site supervisor\, and project manager\, Richard now serves as a special advisor for First Nation communities in constructing energy-efficient\, culturally appropriate\, affordable homes. Over his career he has inspected 5-6000 homes in BC and captured the challenges within communities by placing pen to paper to help find solutions that would benefit all Canadians. He is the principal designer of the “Wet West Coast Building Standard”. With this booklet he created a new building standard for First Nations\, with simple\, affordable concepts and solutions that complimented their lifestyle\, the weathering elements\, Step Code and overall durable and appropriate building materials for the designs. He has also retired from his role as the Asset Manager for Nuxalk Nation; in this role\, he led efforts to build capacity within the community and utilized what resources he had to rebuild a Nation. \nKARIM ABRAHAM — CEO\, Community Power \nKarim is the CEO and co-founder of Kambo Energy Group\, driving growth for the social enterprise that improves housing and reduces energy poverty in communities often missed in the design and delivery of traditional energy efficiency and housing programming – most notably Indigenous Nations\, newcomers to Canada\, and people of colour. Community Power is a distinct division within Kambo Energy Group that focuses on improving homes and reducing energy bills in remote Indigenous communities through holistic energy and housing solutions. Working with over 60 Nations since 2009\, Community Power is recognized as a leader in Indigenous energy and housing projects in Canada.
