SUMMARY:Deep Energy Retrofits: Insight & Inspiration from First Nations Communities
DESCRIPTION:Join Gaëtane Carignan\, of Community Energy Association to learn about key elements of successful energy retrofit programs that have been achieved in First Nations communities in British Columbia with presenters Richard Hall\, independent First Nations Housing Consultant\, and Karim Abraham\, CEO- Community Power. \nPresenters will address assessing\, planning and executing a right path for deep energy retrofits\, at scale\, in community. Facilitated discussion will follow. \nDeep energy retrofits involve changes to the entire building\, including insulation\, windows and doors\, air barriers\, as well as ventilation and space and water heating equipment. An average retrofit can save 10% to 20% of energy while a deep energy retrofit can save 50% to 60%. When approached systematically and thoughtfully\, deep energy retrofitting existing homes increases their durability\, makes them more comfortable\, and reduces the cost of heating and cooling. \nPending 2 CPD points from BC Housing\, this event is one of several Building A Legacy North activities\, enabled through a collaboration of Community Energy Association and CHBA Northern BC with funding support from BC Hydro and Fortis BC. The delivery of this webinar has been inspired by the large-scale\, multi-year\, energy retrofit aspirations of Nisga’a Nation\, and will offer a sneak peak as to what’s to come during an exciting\, multi-day\, in-person Northwest Energy Retrofit Forum\, June 3-5: www.communityenergy.ca/events \nAbout the Presenters:\nRICHARD HALL — International Read Seal carpenter\, NISI qualified building inspector\, independent First Nations Housing Consultant \nAfter 38 years of experience as a Red Seal carpenter\, home builder\, construction foreman\, qualified building inspector\, site supervisor\, and project manager\, Richard now serves as a special advisor for First Nation communities in constructing energy-efficient\, culturally appropriate\, affordable homes. Over his career he has inspected 5-6000 homes in BC and captured the challenges within communities by placing pen to paper to help find solutions that would benefit all Canadians. He is the principal designer of the “Wet West Coast Building Standard”. With this booklet he created a new building standard for First Nations\, with simple\, affordable concepts and solutions that complimented their lifestyle\, the weathering elements\, Step Code and overall durable and appropriate building materials for the designs. He has also retired from his role as the Asset Manager for Nuxalk Nation; in this role\, he led efforts to build capacity within the community and utilized what resources he had to rebuild a Nation. \nKARIM ABRAHAM — CEO\, Community Power \nKarim is the CEO and co-founder of Kambo Energy Group\, driving growth for the social enterprise that improves housing and reduces energy poverty in communities often missed in the design and delivery of traditional energy efficiency and housing programming – most notably Indigenous Nations\, newcomers to Canada\, and people of colour. Community Power is a distinct division within Kambo Energy Group that focuses on improving homes and reducing energy bills in remote Indigenous communities through holistic energy and housing solutions. Working with over 60 Nations since 2009\, Community Power is recognized as a leader in Indigenous energy and housing projects in Canada.

SUMMARY:Quality First Principles of Moving Air course - Castlegar
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a hands-on offering of TECA’s Principles of Moving Air course. Gain a deep understanding of how air moves through a duct system and earn a crucial qualification. \nTwo opportunities to join\nMarch 4–6\, 2024 in Cranbrook\, BC. \nMarch 7–9\, 2024 in Castlegar\, BC. \nCourse Description\nPOMA was developed to provide an in-depth explanation of how air moves through a duct system. This course will be a benefit to everyone working in the New\, Retrofit or Repair portions of the industry. It was developed to give those who are designing or installing duct systems the ability to create quiet\, efficient systems which deliver the required volumes while using the least fan energy. Today\, furnaces\, heat pumps and ventilation systems require larger volumes of air to be moved. Duct fitting shape\, the number of fittings\, air filters\, coils all contribute to reduced flow in ductwork. \nAir filters and their installation are covered thoroughly. The course teaches how to measure current duct system volume and how to calculate the future air flow capacity of the system. A must for retrofit applications. Students learn the relationships of pressure\, pressure drop\, volume\, velocity and power and then will be shown these concepts in practice via demonstrations with our scale model. The knowledge gained of how to incorporate these components and concepts efficiently into a duct system is invaluable. \nCertificates\nThis course has been pre-approved for 32 Continuing Professional Development Points through BC Housing. \nAre you interested in offering Provincial rebates to your clients? TECA’s POMA course is a required qualification to becoming a registered HVAC contractor in the Home Performance Contractors Network. \nSuccessful participants of this course will receive a wallet card and certificate along with a whole new perspective on duct design and further be one step closer to qualifying for ‘the soon to be adopted’ TECA Forced Air Designer Certificate. \nCost\nThrough the Kootenay Clean Energy Transition\, those joining from the Kootenay\, Boundary\, and Columbia Basin regions will receive a $150 subsidy. This discount is reflected in the following pricing: \n\nTECA members: $400\nTECA non-members: $500\nRetrofit Assist contractors: $300\nRegulators / inspectors: $200\n\n

SUMMARY:Webinar: Energy Decarbonization and Meeting CleanBC 2030 Targets
DESCRIPTION:Local governments play a huge role in the direction their communities go in becoming more resilient in the face of climate change. As elected leaders you want to do the right thing by your community\, but sometimes it can be hard to decipher what is the best route to take to get to the ultimate end goal of a safe\, resilient\, affordable\, and healthy community where everyone thrives\, and no one is left behind.  \nConcerns about decarbonization of the energy sector and BC Hydro’s ability to meet the growing demand for low carbon electrification of energy in BC is on all elected officials’ mind these days as we work towards decarbonization targets. If you have questions or find yourself in debate with others about the future of low carbon energy in BC\, then this webinar is for you!  \nThe BC Municipal Climate Leadership Council (BCMCLC) invites elected officials to learn the most up-to-date information from BC Hydro on the future of BC’s electrification plans. The Pembina Institute will also join us to share their recent report on the role of renewable natural gas (RNG) in achieving a net-zero built environment. Presentations:  \n\nBC Hydro: “Our Electrified Future: BC Hydro’s Plan to Support Climate Action” \nPembina Institute: “The Role of Renewable Natural Gas in the Zero Carbon Step Code” \n\nAll locally elected officials and Indigenous leaders in BC are welcome to attend.  \nThe BC Municipal Climate Leadership Council is a network facilitated by the Community Energy Association.  \nAbout the Speakers \nRobyn Wark\, Manager Market Transformation\, BC Hydro  \nRobyn Wark\, MRM\, MCIP is Manager of Market Transformation BC Hydro.  This team works with industry and government to develop long-term market transformation roadmaps (e.g. net zero new construction\, building electrification\, demand response)\, and then partners in implementation and regulations. Prior to that\, she was the team lead for BC Hydro’s Sustainable Communities program for almost a decade\, working as a leading strategist and coach on low carbon communities.  Robyn is Co-Vice-Chair of the BC Energy Step Code Council\, on the Leadership Council of the Building to Electrification Coalition\, Treasurer of the Board of the Community Energy Association\, and a Mentor for Women4Climate. She has taught at Royal Roads University and BCIT.  Outside work\, she coaches her 2 sons’ unruly soccer teams – which is by far her most challenging job to date.  \nRobyn Webb\, Manager\, Local Government Conservation and Climate Action\, BC Hydro  \nRobyn Webb\, BA\, MCIP\, has worked on urban climate solutions at the neighbourhood and municipal level in Manitoba\, Alberta\, and BC for over 15 years. With a background in urban planning\, Robyn has worked on municipal climate action policies and programs in the areas of transportation and buildings for the City of Victoria and the City of Edmonton. Robyn is a board member of Youth Climate Corps and loves to . She currently calls Vancouver – the unceded traditional territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish)\, and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations home where she manages Hydro’s Sustainable Communities program (apparently your name has to be Robyn W to do so 🙂).  \nJessica McIlroy\, Pembina Institute   \nJessica McIlroy is the manager of the Pembina Institute’s Buildings program\, working to rapidly scale our building decarbonization efforts. Jessica is also currently a city councillor with the City of North Vancouver and works with Climate Caucus\, a non-profit network of local government elected officials leading the transformation needed for communities to thrive within planetary boundaries. She is passionate about advancing climate policy and action within local governments and sits on the B.C. Municipal Climate Leaders Council  \nPlease RSVP
