Is it easy to walk, cycle or take public transit in your community? If you could do one thing to make walking, cycling or transit easier, what would it be?
Generally in Nanaimo, I would say it is moderately easy to walk, cycle to take public transit. The City is linear in shape and follows the island highway and coastline. For traveling relatively short distances (Harewood Neighbourhood, Downtown) I would say it is easy to travel by walking, cycling and bus. Over greater distances, their are pinch points where cyclists cannot travel on separated trails, and need to pass through the narrow, hilly streets around the Millstone River to get to other parts of the City. While the bus system has greatly improved over the years (especially with more frequent service to the university and downtown) there are still one hour waits between pickups in other parts of the City. There is a good network of urban trails that is being added to and improved.
If I could do one thing to improve walking, cycling and transit, it would be ensure more stable funding to implement the City’s Transportation Master Plan, which has a number of recommendations that will improve the system, but need the resources to get implemented.
