In Victoria objectives paved the way for tangible results
Case Study
In 2021 and 2022 the City of Victoria developed and implemented a green fleet strategy as part of their target that by 2040, 80% of the City fleet is electrified or renewably powered. The strategy provides clear direction for the organization on their pathway, and the City is seeing significant operational cost savings, in some cases exceeding 50%.Some of the key activities that are enabling this progress are:
- Recruitment of a data specialist
- Selecting the right vehicle for the right application
- Investing in battery electric vehicles
- Accessing the right incentives
We talk to Fleet Manager, Simon Upshon to find out more.

Decisions by Data
The City’s diverse fleet incorporates a wide variety of vehicles covering the many applications required to maintain operations. Almost 100 vehicles in their fleet of approximately 500 units are now battery electric.
Simon Upshon explains how understanding data and being willing to take the first step has helped them take a leadership position.
Using the right vehicle for the job
Ensuring that the correct vehicle is selected for each job allows for the introduction of more zero-emission vehicles. Simon Upshon explains how light duty, medium- and heavy-duty battery electric vehicles are all appropriate and that ensuring the specifics of each application are fully understood opens up opportunities to move to zero-emission options.
Electric fire engine
Grant incentives and a progressive fire department with a desire to make improvements led to the introduction of an unusual electric fire truck in the City of Victoria leading to more than a 50% reduction in operating costs. Savings are being made through elimination oil changes, reduced maintenance on braking systems and fuel costs.
Predictable use = Big savings
Data once again played a pivotal role in the decision to invest in a Class 8 electric truck for a very specific task.
This vehicle required specific customization to fit the needs of the application so working closely with, and challenging the manufacturertowards a solution was an important success factor.
Results
The keys to success
- Leverage grants and incentives: Identifying and accessing financial opportunities can be a key factor in ensuring that the early adoption of new zero-emission vehicles makes financial sense.
- Understand your fleet: Develop a clear picture of exactly how vehicles are used and work out what vehicles are the best candidates for transitioning to zero-emissions alternatives.
- Use data every day: Prioritizing data collection and making it central to operations and future planning is critical to critical decision making
